Die Kantate Himmelskönig, sei willkommen BWV 182 nimmt in der Lebensgeschichte Johann Sebastian Bachs einen besonderen Platz ein. Seit 1708 als Organist und Kammermusiker am Weimarer Hof tätig, war er am 2. März 1714 zum Hofkonzertmeister ernannt worden. Bachs Eröffnungsstück dazu war Himmelskönig, sei willkommen. Die Kantate erklang am Palmsonntag 1714, dem 25. März des Jahres. Bach hat seine Kantate dann sowohl in Weimar als auch in Leipzig mehrfach erneut aufgeführt und dabei immer wieder Änderungen vorgenommen. Von den insgesamt vier Versionen wurde für die Neuausgabe die erste Leipziger Fassung ausgewählt. Anders als die Weimarer Fassungen ist sie mit den Mitteln der heutigen Praxis gut darstellbar. In seinem Debütstück von 1714 zeigt der neuernannte Konzertmeister, was er kann: Die acht Sätze halten vielerlei schöne, lohnende Aufgaben für Chorsänger und Vokalsolisten bereit, und hinzu kommt als besondere Attraktion eine virtuose Solopartie für die Blockflöte.
