Description:
The Trio op. 4 is one of Clasing's few chamber music works; it testifies to his excellent compositional skills and his own personal style. As was customary at the time, the trio is conceived from the pianoforte, which is always present and requires an outstanding performer. The string instruments are nevertheless indispensable. The work therefore requires three experienced musicians. The movements follow the conventions of the period in which they were written: a slow variation movement stands between the confident opening movement in scholastic sonata form and the finale, which combines formal elements of rondo and sonata form. The music is appealing, the themes are freshly invented, the form and scoring are perfect, and the work offers its performers the greatest pleasure in playing. (Guido Johannes Joerg)
