Description:
Joseph Woelfl’s "Trois Grands Trios pour le Fortepiano, Violon et Basse," Op. 23, were—as was customary at the time—conceived around the keyboard instrument, which is ever-present and demands an outstanding performer. The string instruments are nonetheless indispensable; the trios thus require three accomplished musicians. With its four extensive movements, Trio No. 1 (Premier Trio) certainly follows the conventions of its time: The opening movement in sonata form is followed by the inner movements in reverse order: first a brisk minuet (more of a modern scherzo than an old-fashioned minuet) and then the slow movement. The finale is structured as a series of variations. There are thematic connections between the movements. The music is appealing, the themes are original, the form and instrumentation are consummate, and the work offers its performers the greatest joy in performance. (Guido Johannes Joerg)
