Joseph Woelfl’s "Trois Grands Trios pour le Fortepiano, Violon et Basse," Op. 23, were—as was customary at the time—conceived with the keyboard instrument in mind, which is ever-present and demands an outstanding performer. The string instruments are nonetheless indispensable; the trios thus require three accomplished musicians. With its four extensive movements, Trio No. 2 (Deuxième Trio) certainly follows the conventions of its time: The first movement, in sonata form—in which the main theme is introduced in a brief, slow introduction—is followed by a slow movement, a brisk menuetto (more of a modern scherzo than an old-fashioned minuet), and finally the finale, which combines formal elements of rondo and variation forms. The music is appealing, the themes are original, the form and instrumentation are perfect, and the work offers its performers the greatest joy in performance. (Guido Johannes Joerg)
