Joseph Woelfl’s "Trois Grands Trios pour le Fortepiano, Violon et Basse," Op. 23, were—as was customary at the time—conceived around the keyboard instrument, which is ever-present and demands an outstanding performer. The string instruments are nonetheless indispensable; the trios thus require three accomplished musicians. With its four extensive movements, Trio No. 3 (Troisième Trio) certainly follows the conventions of the period in which it was composed: The first movement, in sonata form, is distinctive in that the main and secondary themes differ only slightly from one another, thereby obscuring the movement’s otherwise strict formal structure—the listener is instead left with the impression of a more freely structured fantasia. This is followed by a slow movement and a brisk menuetto (more of a modern scherzo than an old-fashioned minuet). The concluding finale is a combination of rondo and variation forms. There are thematic connections between the movements: by having the fortepiano take up the theme of the first movement again at the end of the finale, the close thematic link between the opening and closing movements is highlighted, and a framework is brought to a close. The music is appealing, the themes are original, the form and instrumentation are masterful, and the work offers its performers the greatest joy in performance. (Guido Johannes Joerg)
