Description:
Rossini’s piano duet was arranged for full orchestra by Richard Wagner. Francesco Florimo calls for piano four-hands as well as three low-register string instruments ad libitum: two cellos and a double bass. The vocal parts can be performed by a small vocal ensemble or a mixed choir. Although this is an unusual instrumentation, it allows for various performance options, including combinations with the original version or Wagner’s orchestration. The text by Carlo Pepoli is provided in Italian and in German translation.
The piano score draws heavily on Rossini’s original piano part.
Florimo himself designated the piano parts as "Pianoforte I" and "Pianoforte II"; however, the piano part can easily be performed on a single instrument (for four hands). To allow both versions to be performed using the set of parts (E.D. 12678), the piano part is included in duplicate. The three string parts are each included once.
