An episode from the life of Pierrot? From an almost unreal beginning, a steadily building continuum of movement develops, oscillating between "painful" and "dance-like", insisting on its relentless progress. Finally, the energy culminates and returns to the first motif of the middle section, which developed from a short turn in Arnold Schönberg's "Pierrot lunaire". Only then, again with a small, three-note "Pierrot" idea, does the retreat into unreality take place - and finally, at last, the pause. (Dorothea Hofmann)
