Description:
Mozart's "Misercordias Domini" K. 222 (205a) was commissioned by the Bavarian Elector, as can be seen from a letter from the composer to Fr. It must have been composed in Munich in the first two months of 1775. The small church music work was finally performed on March 5 of the same year.
In close reference to the carefully crafted works of his Salzburg models and using a motif from Johann Ernst Eberlein's "Benedixisti Domine", Mozart combines polyphony with the expressive power of exciting harmony in this contrapuntal masterpiece.
As the copy sent by the composer to Fr. Martini in Bologna cannot be found, the authenticity of the viola part is not certain.
