Die erstmals edierte Urfassung der Missa Sancti Nicolai Tolentini (1768) ist Johann Michael Haydns erstes grösseres kirchenmusikalisches Werk, das in Salzburg entstanden ist. Die Nicolai-Messe entspricht dem Typus der Missa solemnis. Auffallend ist die Besetzung, die nicht nur im Schaffen Haydns eine Besonderheit darstellt, sondern für das kirchenmusikalische Repertoire Salzburgs als einzigartig zu bewerten ist. Zwei Sopran-Soli stehen einem einstimmigen Oberchor gegenüber, begleitet durch Streicher, Trompeten und Orgel.
