Description:
The original version of the Missa Sancti Nicolai Tolentini (1768), edited for the first time, is Johann Michael Haydn's first major church music work composed in Salzburg. The Nicolai Mass corresponds to the type of the Missa solemnis. The scoring is striking, not only because it is unusual in Haydn's oeuvre, but also because it is unique in Salzburg's church music repertoire. Two soprano solos are contrasted with a monophonic upper choir, accompanied by strings, trumpets and organ.
