Description:
Michael Haydn composed three of his masses in honor of the holy archangels: the "Michaelis", the "Gabrielis" and the "Raphaelismesse" presented here. With its lack of vocal soloists, it belongs to the "Missa in pieno" type. Four trumpets and two ad libitum oboe parts, added later by the composer, lend the work a festive sound in the Baroque tradition. At the same time, elements of the sensitive style are incorporated.
Gloria and Credo have survived in two versions, a polyphonic short version and a longer version written by Haydn himself. The Carus edition, based on the authentic performance material from St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg, contains both versions, with the long version being published here for the first time.
