Description:
Bach's solo soprano cantata Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut was composed in the summer of 1714 for the Weimar court service on the 11th Sunday after Trinity. The cantata poem by the Darmstadt court poet Georg Christian Lehms (1684-1717), which is based on the well-known parable of the Pharisee and the publican, gains extraordinary presence and expressive intensity in Bach's setting. Bach performed the cantata several times both in Weimar and in the Köthen and Leipzig years, making various changes in the process. The main subject of the present edition is the Leipzig version of 1723, whose instrumental part includes a violoncello piccolo in addition to the solo oboe and the usual string and continuo instrumentation. The appendix to the edition contains variants for individual movements from Bach's earlier performances, including a Köthen version with obbligato viola da gamba which is particularly interesting for today's practice.
