Description:
Johann Sebastian Bach's choral cantata "Meine Seel erhebt den Herren" BWV 10 was composed for the Feast of the Visitation of Mary (July 2) in 1724. Thematically, it is based on Mary's song of praise (Magnificat) from the Gospel of Luke.
Bach transforms the free combination of paraphrased poetry and biblical text into varied music, ranging from the demanding opening chorus and two large arias to the internalized duet and the vivid recitatives. Even in the relatively small instrumental scoring with trumpet (which is optional), two oboes, strings and basso continuo, Bach develops a magnificent tonal language in keeping with the hymn of praise.
The practical Urtext edition is based on the "New Bach Edition".
