Description:
Bärenreiter's scholarly-critical edition of Brahms's popular Quintet in f for piano and strings contains everything that a modern Urtext edition should offer: a solid, reliable musical text based on Brahms's autograph and the first edition, for which the autograph of the version for two pianos, six years older, was also consulted; furthermore, a text on the historical context of the work as well as on performance practice and finally a comprehensive Critical Report which deals with an evaluation of the sources and the readings.
The editor, Daniel Boomhower, deals with the differing readings between the string parts of the autograph engraver's model and the small print string parts in the score of the first edition and the separate parts of the first edition. Relevant readings of the version for two pianos appear in the appendix to the Critical Report.
