Serenade No. 1 (Op. 11) was composed in 1858, while Brahms enjoyed a position in the tiny court of Detmold, the capital of the Principality of Lippe. The original work, now lost, is said to have been scored for chamber orchestra with a wind section of flute, two clarinets, horn and bassoon. Unfortunately only Brahms' later version for full orchestra remains. Using Brahms' full orchestral score, and retaining as much of the instrumental colour as possible, Chris Nex has arranged this Serenade for the modern grouping of wind quintet, string quartet and double bass. This new edition replaces an earlier publication which first appeared in the Phylloscopus catalogue (PP366S & 366).
