The cantata Widerstehe doch der Sünde BWV 54 is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most popular solo cantatas today. The short text, comprising just three movements, comes from a collection of cantata texts by the Darmstadt court poet Georg Christian Lehms from 1711 and warns in drastic terms that no sinner will inherit the kingdom of God. It is certainly no coincidence that Bach assigned this text to an alto voice, which at the time was often understood as a symbol for the repentant sinner.
The cantata dates from Bach's Weimar period and has only survived in a fair copy of the score by Johann Gottfried Walther (musical text) and Johann Tobias Krebs (vocal text), which presents no difficulties for the edition. Although the cantata is assigned to Sunday Oculi in Lehms' printed text, it can easily be sung on other occasions during the church year.
