Description:
THE BITTER AND THE SWEET was commissioned by the chamber music ensemble Pastiche, which also recorded the work. The composition is structured both as a rondo and as a theme with variations, and is rooted in klezmer music, the traditional Jewish festive music of Eastern Europe. The three-measure theme that opens the work recurs repeatedly as a kind of signal announcing the beginning of a new main section. Each section takes up motivic, melodic, and rhythmic material from the preceding parts and develops it further within different harmonic structures.
