Description:
Brahms' Clarinet Trio was composed in 1891 and was inspired by the playing of clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld and his unique musicality and art of phrasing. The composer envisaged the viola as a possible alternative instrumentation to the clarinet - similar to the horn trio. The work was rehearsed in both scorings before the premiere (the viola version was played here by Joseph Joachim) and the inverted edition.
This scholarly-critical edition, edited by Christopher Hogwood, offers both a preface on the work's genesis and performance practice as well as a comprehensive critical report with facsimile pages.
