In a mixture of cantata and concert piece, Beethoven sets a hymn to art in the "Choral Fantasy". The work, which lasts around twenty minutes, is often seen as a precursor to the "Ode to Joy" from the 9th Symphony. After a piano introduction, a dialog between piano and orchestra unfolds over almost 400 bars before solos and choir join in the action in the last 200 bars or so. This arrangement makes the work accessible for smaller choral and orchestral formations and requires only half of the original wind parts. The tonal balance and musical substance are retained, making this version a practical alternative to the original. All vocal parts (soli and choruses) remain untouched by the arrangement, so that the piano reductions and choral scores of the original version can be used.
