Description:
In a mixture of cantata and concert piece, Beethoven sets a hymn to art in the Choral Fantasy. The approximately twenty-minute work is often seen as a precursor to the "Ode to Joy" of the 9th Symphony. After a piano introduction, a dialog between the piano and orchestra unfolds over almost 400 bars before the soloists and choir enter the action in the last 200 bars or so. [
In the main section entitled "Finale" (beginning with basses and cellos), the theme from Beethoven's early song "Gegenliebe" (WoO 118), on which the "Ode to Joy" is also based, is introduced, varied and finally turned to F major in the "Marcia".
The main source for the edition is the first edition published in parts and checked by Beethoven in 1811; in addition, the English printed part by Clementi (1810) is used as a comparative source. The edition contains an English vocal version in a translation by Natalia Macfarren from the 19th century.
