Description:
Luminous rays emanated from the 'Messe de sainte Cécile'. First you were dazzled, then enchanted, then overwhelmed. This is how Camille Saint-Saëns describes the impression made on him by Charles Gounod's probably best-known mass setting. The work, which Gounod had composed in 1855 in honour of the patron saint of church music, soon became known far beyond the borders of France and achieved a popularity like hardly any other sacred composition. The present arrangement by Urs Stäuble makes the Messe solennelle de sainte Cécile accessible to smaller choirs and orchestras and requires only about a third of the original wind parts. The arranger attaches great importance to preserving the solemn splendour of the composition. Tonal balance and musical substance are retained, making this version a practical alternative to the original (Carus 27.095/00). The piano reduction and choral score of the original edition can be used for the arrangement. Original version: Soli STB, Coro SATB, Pic, 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 2 Clt, 4 Fg, 4 Cor, 2 Pist, 2 Tr, 3 Trb, Timp, Perc, Arpa, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb, Org, Arrangement for Chamber Orchestra: Soli STB, Coro SATB, Fl, Ob, Clt, 2 Fg, Cor, Tr, Timp, Perc, Arpa, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb, [Org]. Also available is an anonymous arrangement of the Mass for two equal voices and organ or piano accompaniment (Carus 27.025/00).
