Luminous rays emanated from the 'Messe de sainte Cécile'. At first one was dazzled, then enchanted, then overwhelmed. This is how the composer Camille Saint-Saëns describes the impression that Charles Gounod's most famous mass setting made on him. The work, which was composed in 1855 in honor of the patron saint of sacred music, soon became known far beyond the borders of France and achieved a popularity like almost no other sacred composition.
