Thus sang the Parcae is the title of Goethe's "Song of the Parcae", the goddesses of fate in Greek and Roman mythology. The excerpt from "Iphigenia in Tauris" served Johannes Brahms as a model for his "Song of the Parzes" op. 89, in which he describes the struggle to overcome the mythical curse through the purity of true, noble action and the power of hope in gripping, eruptive sounds. This arrangement for chamber orchestra reduces the wind section to a solo quintet with flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. A single instrumentation is also sufficient for the strings; a double instrumentation is also possible if available. In this way, the symphonic character and the differentiation of the instrumental timbres are retained even under limited conditions. The choral part is identical to the original version, so that its choral score and piano reduction can be used. The chamber versions of Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem" (Carus 27.055/50) or "Schicksalslied" (Carus 10.399/50), for example, which are available in the same instrumentation, can be combined in concert. The original version of the work is available under Carus 10.400/00.
