It is one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "The Magic Flute" was composed in 1791 for Emanuel Schikaneder's Freihaustheater in Vienna and combines fairy-tale elements of magic with Masonic ideas. In his final opera, Mozart displays the full range of his compositional skill: from the folk-inspired melodies in Papageno's songs to Pamina's heartfelt arias, the depth and tranquility of Sarastro's singing, and the virtuoso coloratura of the Queen of the Night. Thus, "The Magic Flute" is a serious opera, a lively "Singspiel", and an Enlightenment-era didactic work all in one. In short: there is something for everyone, and that is likely what accounts for the success of "The Magic Flute". This chamber version by Urs Stäuble reduces the orchestra to a chamber ensemble without compromising the musical substance. On the contrary: the transparent instrumentation allows the melodic lines and harmonic turns to stand out with particular clarity. The original trombone parts are taken over here by the other wind instruments; trumpet and timpani are scored ad libitum. This version of "The Magic Flute" is particularly well-suited for smaller ensembles, university ensembles, and concert performances with limited spatial constraints. In addition to the full score, a piano reduction, orchestral parts, and a choral score are available. Original instrumentation: 18 soloists, 4 speaking roles, SATTBB choir, 2 Fl/Pic, 2 Ob, 2 Clt, 2 CdB, 2 Fg, 2 Cor, 2 Tr, 3 Trb, Timp, Str d'a, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb, Arrangement for chamber orchestra: 18 soloists, 4 speaking roles, SATTBB choir, Fl/Pic, Ob, Clt, Fg, Cor, [Tr, Timp], Str d'a, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb.
