Description:
Christian Ehregott Weinlig has created a three-movement cantata for mixed choir and orchestra that can be performed very well in both church services and concerts. The introductory movement is composed as a pastorale in swaying six-eighths time on the text "A child is born to us" (Isaiah 9:6); the instrumentation with flutes, oboes and horns emphasizes the pastoral character very effectively. In the middle movement, a choir of angels dialogues with a choir of men about the incomprehensibility of Jesus' birth; here, the different instrumentation of the two choirs (woodwinds - full orchestra) achieves a beautiful development of sound. The final chorus is the virtuoso-figured chorale "Gloria sei dir gesungen", in which trumpets and timpani contribute to the heightened splendor of the sound.
A beautiful and rewarding composition by the former Thomaner and later Dresden Kreuzkantor, which will not fail to make an impact despite its simple level of difficulty.
