Description:
The work is based on a ballad by Paul Heyse, which, in evocative verses, describes how an army of Moors, while marching through the Pyrenees, is suddenly overcome by a longing for home and, at that very moment, falls victim to an ambush by the Basques. With its resonant choral setting, colorful orchestration, and subtle interpretation of the text through motivic cross-references, Rheinberger’s musical setting effectively brings the story to life.
