Description:
The work is based on a ballad by Paul Heyse, which describes in vivid verse how an army of Moors, while marching through the Pyrenees, is suddenly overcome by nostalgia for their homeland and, at that very moment, falls victim to an ambush by the Basques. With its resonant choral setting, its colorful orchestration, and its subtle interpretation of the text through motivic cross-references, Rheinberger’s musical setting effectively brings the events to life.
