From 1996 to 2000, Bärenreiter published Beethoven’s nine symphonies in critical-practical Urtext editions, edited by the renowned musicologist Jonathan Del Mar.
The editorial process was a monumental undertaking due to the extraordinarily complex source material, particularly in the case of the Ninth Symphony, which has been preserved in some twenty different sources.
It was therefore no surprise that the new Bärenreiter Urtext edition caused quite a stir in the music world.
Since its publication, Del Mar’s edition has received unanimous praise from conductors, performers, and critics. It has become the most widely used edition of Beethoven’s symphonies, used not only nightly in concert halls but also in CD recordings by John Eliot Gardiner, David Zinman, Jos van Immerseel, Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, and many other conductors.
