Description:
Edward Elgar's famous "Enigma" Variations were composed between 1898 and 1899 and are a collection of variations on a theme of his own. Each of the variations is dedicated to a close friend of the composer ("Dedicated to my Friends Pictured Within") and paints a portrait of the respective person in the form of a sounding riddle.
Christopher Hogwood's Urtext edition takes into account all surviving sources including the early sketches, the autograph score and the revised musical text from 1904. The new edition eliminates many inconsistencies between the score and the reprints of the orchestral parts and at the same time documents Elgar's revisions.
In addition to the usually performed final bars, the edition also contains the original ending of the last movement "(E. D. U.) Finale".
