Description:
For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has considered no fewer than 16 sources, more than have ever been consulted for any other edition of the work. Some of these sources have been evaluated here for the first time, including a newly discovered source, a manuscript piano reduction, which is particularly important for the evaluation of the "Liber scriptus". The Bärenreiter edition thus arrives at new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and offers practical solutions to musical and interpretative problems of the famous work.
The text section of the new edition examines the history of the work's composition and compares the most important editions of the work published in the 19th century with regard to musicological issues. In the process, the transmission of misunderstandings that were carried forward into the Ricordi editions of 1913 and 1964 are traced. The appendix contains the first version of the "Liber scriptus" for choir, while the later version for mezzo-soprano solo can be found in the main section.
