Description:
During his most productive period as an opera composer, Camille Saint-Saëns also wrote sacred works, of which the "Oratorio de Noël" (Christmas Oratorio) is particularly popular worldwide. The colorful and opulently orchestrated "Messe de Requiem" op. 54 was composed in Bern in 1878; the composer dedicated it to his patron Albert Libon.
In order to allow the Requiem to be performed in a somewhat smaller orchestration (without losing its special features), this edition reduces the orchestra to eleven wind instruments, two harps, an organ and string orchestra. The score reproduces the original instrumentation, while the performance material can be used for both the original and the smaller instrumentation.
Thanks to the arrangement for strings, harp and organ (arr. K. Rothaupt Carus 27.317/50), it is also possible to perform the work on a smaller scale.
