Description:
The Missa brevis KV 140 (Anh. 235d) occupies a special position in that it approaches the type of pastoral mass no longer represented in Mozart's other mass works. Like in no other setting of the Ordinary, song-like, graceful melodies predominate; only the main part of the Credo and the first section of the Agnus Dei stand out due to their solemn attitude.
New, weighty evidence for the question of authenticity was gained through the discovery of old parts that were produced at a time when the name Mozart could not have been used for the work of another composer: a copy in Kremsmünster Abbey, which according to Altman Kellner was written "around (soon after) 1770" in Salzburg, and a copy in Augsburg, Heilig Kreuz Abbey, of which thirteen parts contain autograph entries by W. A. Mozart. The master's hand is unmistakable.
