Description:
The "Missa in C" K. 167 is the only mass by Mozart to bear a dedication in its title: "Missa in honorem SS:mae Trinitatis". The work is therefore linked to a specific occasion, which has not yet been identified. The autograph bears the date "Giugno 1773" and so the date of the premiere can presumably be fixed at June 5, 1773 (Trinity Sunday).
The large orchestral scoring with two oboes, two clarinets and two trumpets, timpani, two violins, bass and organ shows the high solemnity of the occasion of the mass composition.
Compared to the previously composed masses, there is a decisive difference in the "Missa in C": one searches in vain for pronounced dramatic features and strong contrasts, the mood is more serious and there is a striving for formal roundness in all movements.
