Description:
In January 1779, Mozart took up his new post as court organist in Salzburg, which required him to compose a series of church works. The autograph of his "Missa in C" K. 317, which has been known as the "Coronation Mass" since the 19th century, is dated "li 23 marzo 1779" by Mozart himself at the beginning of the Kyrie. The possible dates for the premiere are the Easter holidays on 4 or 5 April 1779.
Mozart probably wanted to demonstrate his musical ability by composing the mass for his inauguration, as he chose a very generous, by no means modest scope and instrumentation.
The nickname "Coronation Mass" refers to various coronation celebrations after Mozart's death at which the mass was performed. However, the legend that the mass was composed to commemorate the coronation of the image of Maria Plain near Salzburg still persists today.
