Description:
Beethoven's incidental music op. 84 was composed in 1809 for a performance of Goethe's drama "Egmont" at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Numerous composers of the time, some of them in collaboration with the author himself, tried their hand at the dramatic subject matter of Goethe's tragedy. The overture reflects the themes of the ensuing play with its moving nature, and has become one of Beethoven's most popular works for the stage over the last two hundred years.
For this new edition, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar draws on various manuscript sources, including a previously unconsidered manuscript set of parts. Numerous discrepancies, such as missing notes in the flute part or unclear bowings, have thus been clarified for the first time.
