Description:
The "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" is often described as the first composition of modernism and is one of Debussy's most popular and most frequently performed orchestral works. The piece has survived in a variety of sources, some of the most important of which are included for the first time in this new scholarly-critical edition.
Most editions available today are based on the first edition of 1895, which, however, contains many of the engraver's errors. Finally, if one looks at the accompanying orchestral parts, one is confronted with countless discrepancies.
This new Urtext edition takes into account readings of a printed edition of the score from around 1908, which contains corrections by the composer. These important changes are not to be found in any other source and relate to metronome markings, pitch changes as well as additional notes, tempo and articulation markings, which further enhance the carefully crafted work. Even a breath mark in the flute solo passage that opens the composition has been added here.
