Description:
The Première Rhapsodie is one of the two concertante works that Debussy completed and which were premiered and published during his lifetime. Commissioned in 1909 for the final examinations at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1910, the composition was a success from the outset, prompting Debussy to orchestrate it in the summer of 1911. When transcribing the clarinet part of the already published version for clarinet and piano, he made some subtle changes. Bar 201 is particularly noteworthy; this bar has been a point of contention among clarinettists for over 100 years.
This scholarly-critical edition is the first ever Urtext edition of the orchestral version. It is based on all known sources and focuses on a previously unconsidered source that sheds a completely new light on the work.
