Mozart composed the Symphony in C K. 425, which is known as the "Linz Symphony", within a few days at the end of October/beginning of November 1783 in the palace of Count Johann Joseph Anton von Thun-Hohenstein (1711 to 1798) in Linz, where he was staying for three weeks with Constanze on his return journey from Salzburg. "Tuesday, November 4th," he wrote to his father on October 31st (the day after his arrival in Linz), "I will give an academy performance here at the theater. - and because I don't have a single symphony with me, I'm writing neck and neck on a new one, which must be finished by then". According to this, the symphony was performed for the first time on November 4, 1783 in the theater in Linz.
