Description:

The Symphony No. 8 in C major – also called the "Great C Major Symphony" to distinguish it from Symphony No. 6 of 1817/18, which is also in C major – was written by Schubert between 1825 and 1828. After Beethoven's symphonies, it is considered the most important symphonic orchestral work of the 1st half of the 19th century and was highly regarded by Schumann and Mendelssohn, who also conducted the first public performance in Leipzig in 1839. Schubert never heard the work, which was long considered unperformable, himself.
This new edition – as a preprint from volume V/4 of the New Schubert Edition – is based on the only primary source of the symphony, Schubert's autograph. Despite this comparatively simple source situation, the edition of the gigantic work poses considerable problems for the editor, because the rather long genesis in different stages of composition has left its mark on the autograph: "writing layers" had to be identified and numerous entries had to be reinterpreted, some of which will have an influence on the performance of the work according to the new score. The old counting of the symphony as "No. 7" goes back to the first complete edition of Schubert's works, which added the "Unfinished" in B minor to the seven completed symphonies as the eighth. Later, in order to place the "Unfinished" chronologically correctly before the Great C major Symphony, the work was also given No. 9.
