Description:
Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum, HWV 278, received its world premiere at St. Paul’s Cathedral on July 7, 1713, as part of the celebrations marking the Treaty of Utrecht. As one of his first compositions for the English church, he set to music the text of the ancient hymn of praise—whose origins are unknown—in English ("We praise thee, O God").
The festive instrumentation, appropriate for the occasion, omits the addition of timpani, which—much like a harpsichord—were likely not used in the performance at St. Paul’s Cathedral due to space constraints.
