Description:
On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of the playwright Ludvig Holberg, a statue was erected in his honor in 1884. Edvard Grieg, also a native of Bergen, was commissioned to compose an open-air cantata for the festivities. But Grieg also dealt with Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a "wig piece", as Grieg wrote to his publisher, which hearkens back to Holberg's lifetime: a baroque-historical dance suite for piano, which leads from a rushing prelude and several dance movements via an air based on Bach to an impetuous Rigaudon.
Grieg later arranged this "suite in the old style" for string orchestra. In this version, the work became one of his most popular compositions. For this new critical edition, Christoph Rinne-Schroeder has carefully analyzed the first edition and compared it with previously unconsidered performance material annotated by Edvard Grieg.
