Description:
This piece is quite virtuosic, but the aim is not technical performance but rather to convey emotion through strong melodic lines and harmonies that are tonal but quite complex. The titles of the four movements are self-explanatory. The Lament has a clear Celtic character with passionate melodies. The Dance is light-footed, with elusive ternary rhythms and a subtle mixture of optimism and melancholy. The Scherzo is rather straightforward, with a jazzy touch, and contains many quite demanding fast passages for the flute. The epilogue, on the other hand, is calm and simple, with a mood of peaceful resignation.
