Description:
Louis Spohr's Fantasie op. 35 from 1807 is one of the standard works of the solo harp repertoire today. The work was composed in Gotha, where Spohr's wife Dorette received harp lessons from the court chamber musician Johann Backofen. On the young couple's concert tours at that time, Dorette not only performed new compositions by her husband for this instrument, but also fantasies by her teacher. The influence of Backofen's works on Spohr's fantasia is unmistakable.
This new edition by harpist and musicologist Masumi Nagasawa offers an Urtext of the two fantasias by Spohr and Backofen, with a detailed Preface (German/English) and Critical Report (English). In addition, the edition contains a score of Spohr's fantasia with fingerings and other historically informed performance markings provided by the editor as well as a comprehensive "Performing Practice Commentary" (English), in which the performance of this piece, originally written for the single pedal harp, on the modern double pedal harp is explained in accordance with the performance practice of Spohr's time (including fingerings, tempi, ornaments, pedal techniques such as glissandi etc.).
