Jehan Alain, a pupil of Marcel Dupré, comes from a family of musicians based near Paris. In addition to literary influences, his works are influenced by Gregorian chant, early music, impressionism, jazz and non-European rhythms and tonal systems.

His almost chamber-music-like treatment of the organ reveals a stylistic departure from the Romantic-orchestral organ type and thus a turn towards an ideal of sound that unites elements of French Classicism and Romanticism in a new kind of synthesis.

Both the interpretation and analytical study of Alain's organ works were difficult due to the lack of a critical edition. This first three-volume Urtext edition of all of the master's works closes this gap. The editor is a world-renowned researcher and interpreter of Alain's organ works.
