Vierne's six symphonies are at the pinnacle of his organ oeuvre: With them, he continued the glittering French tradition of this genre and took it to a peak. Vierne's compositional role models are clearly recognizable: above all Franck and Widor, but also Mendelssohn and Schumann. In addition to the beautiful melodic inspirations of the slow movements and the sometimes surprisingly bizarre ideas of the scherzos and intermezzi, it is above all the chromaticism that characterizes Vierne's style. The critical edition of Louis Vierne's works offers the most accurate and authentic musical text possible: the edition corrects clear printing errors in the first editions, comments on doubtful passages and offers alternative solutions. The edition is based on the first editions, the composer's surviving manuscripts and lists of corrections by colleagues, pupils and present-day Vierne interpreters. All works are also available in individual editions.
