Mit seinen sechs Orgelsymphonien, entstanden zwischen 1895 und 1930, setzte Louis Vierne die glanzvolle Tradition dieser Gattung fort und führte sie zu ihrem Gipfel. Die kompositorischen Vorbilder Viernes sind deutlich zu erkennen: vor allem Franck und Widor [bei dem er Kompositionsunterricht erhielt], aber auch Mendelssohn und Schumann. Wie in der 2., 5. und 6. Symphonie benutzt Vierne in der 4. die zyklische Form. Im Prélude wird das thematische Hauptmaterial des ganzen Werkes präsentiert.
