Description:
Time flies—yes, it races by—and then again it stands still, and the seconds trickle away, barely perceptible, like individual drops of thick pitch. You can gain time and you can lose time—you can steal it, but you can also give it away. But you can’t grasp it, you can’t stop it: Everything flows, and the inevitability of this flow is what defines life. You can’t hold time, taste it, smell it, or see it. Yet precisely when it seems to stand still, when minutes turn into hours, when there seems to be no movement left, only stagnation—that is when it can be heard: the all-encompassing, roaring, deafening, terrifying thunder of time. The work is conceived as a whole; the composition is of moderate difficulty and can also be performed on a two-manual organ. The timbres and dynamics are indicated primarily as suggestions and can, depending on the specific circumstances, be realized with considerably greater complexity. (Dorothea Hofmann)
