Description:
Mieczysław Surzyński's Improvisation op. 38 is probably one of the composer's best-known and most popular works. The first edition of 1910 (Leipzig: Junne) is preceded by the motto: "Holy God, holy strong [God], holy immortal [God], have mercy on us." This hymn of praise to the divine trinity, the Trishagion, is one of the oldest Christian antiphons of all. In the liturgies of the East, it is still one of the basic prayers, but in the Roman liturgy it is only used on Good Friday. (Otto Depenheuer)
