Description:
2008 marked the centenary of the birth of the composer, cantor and organist Hugo Distler. He studied organ with Günther Ramin and composition with Hermann Grabner in Leipzig. He then worked as cantor and organist at St. Jacobi in Lübeck and from 1937 as a composition and organ teacher at the Stuttgart Musikhochschule. In 1940, he took on the same duties at the Berlin Musikhochschule and was also director of the Berlin Cathedral Choir from 1941. Not least under the influence of the Lübeck Stellwagen organ at St. Jacobi, he championed the pre-baroque and baroque sound ideal of the organ and the types of form appropriate to this sound ideal. His stylistic stance was aimed at a specifically neo-baroque, objective sound aesthetic.
