Description:
William Byrd is considered one of the most important composers of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. A creative Catholic in the midst of the Anglican court of Elizabeth I, he is known today primarily for his masses, motets and madrigals. In addition to vocal music, however, he also composed a considerable number of pieces for keyboard instruments, the quality of which is in no way inferior to the works of his younger contemporaries Frescobaldi and Sweelinck. This edition contains a selection of his most important works for keyboard instruments, some of which are taken from such famous collections as "Fitzwilliam Virginal Book", "Parthenia" or "My Ladye Nevells Booke". In addition to five large fantasias, including the monumental "Fantasia in a", there are smaller preludes and voluntaries as well as three polyphonic hexachord settings.
The preface offers a detailed overview and evaluation of the sources, brief descriptions of the pieces as well as valuable information on notation and performance practice.
